DALLAS (August 25, 2014) – This week, as thousands of North Texas area children start another school year with new clothes, school supplies and the latest technological advances, hundreds of children in Mexico will be grateful to receive a luxury item of their own, a backpack. Bishop T.D. Jakes’ MegaCARE Missions and The Potter’s House of Dallas and Fort Worth, recently concluded their Back-To-School Expo where hundreds of DFW families were given essential supplies, health physicals and support needed to ensure a healthy and productive start to the new school year.

Taking a note from its visionary and founder, T.D. Jakes, MegaCARE will extend the support given to the local community and reach across the globe to help families. Holding true to MegaCARE’s commitment in serving impoverished communities nationwide and across the world, 200 children in Reynosa, Mexico will receive much-needed backpacks in less than one week. A partner with MegaCARE since 2001, Oasis in the Desert aids in the on-the-ground mission work alongside MegaCARE leaders in Mexico and will help with the distribution of the items.

As standard living necessities, especially school supplies, are considered a luxury in the border town of Reynosa, these backpacks will serve as a replacement for the plastic grocery bags used to carry educational supplies. On average, the family income of the children receiving this donation ranges from $700 to $1,500 per year. The backpacks will be distributed, Saturday September 30th to school age children ages 5 to 12 years old.

Serving both domestic and international communities like Dallas/Ft. Worth and poverty stricken areas like Reynosa, these charitable acts continue to bring together organizations looking to give on a broader level.
Leveraging the power of partnership, South Dallas is also taking part in MegaCARE’s larger “think locally act globally” type directive. Three hundred backpacks were also provided to various Section 8 apartment units as part of this larger initiative. Ken Smith, President of the Revitalize South Dallas Coalition and Rev. Joe Patterson, Senior Pastor of Greater New Zion Baptist Church distributed an additional 450 backpacks collectively to children heading back to South Dallas schoolyards.

Totaling more than 2,000 backpack donations across North Texas and Reynosa, partnerships like these are paving the way coalitions can think and act beyond their own zip codes. After yet another successful back-to-school fair hosted by Mayor Mike Rawlings, more and more organizations are coming together to share in large-scale charitable distributions.

MegaCARE’s organizational leaders continue to strengthen domestic and international relations with the global communities they serve and will be heading to Reynosa, Mexico in the coming weeks to continue to work on ongoing and new programs.
