Bishop Jakes Draws Large Crowd at A Time to Own Housing Fair

Event attracts families eager to buy and keep their homes

DALLAS, TX — June 20, 2009 — In recognition of Homeownership Month, The Metroplex Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) hosted “A Time to Own,” a one day family focused event at Clay Academy, Saturday June 20, 2009.

The event included workshops and seminars on everything from understanding FHA financing, knowing your credit score to providing alternative solutions to foreclosure.

Homeownership is vitally important to fostering a thriving economy and creating a strong sense of community, said MEDC founder Bishop T.D. Jakes, who was on hand to speak to the crowd and to encourage potential and current homeowners to become educated about their options in today’s market.

Event sponsor, Bank of America was on hand to prequalify prospective homeowners and to lend their expertise in popular workshops including FHA financing and the Recovery Act 8K Tax Incentive.  Other event supporters included Home Depot, which distributed over 1,000 Home Depot gift cards and sponsored children’s building activity workshops throughout the day, as well as one-on-one counseling to at-risk borrowers by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

MEDC Director Kim M. Drayton was pleased with the crowd turn out.  “The objective of this event was to promote homeownership and homeownership preservation by increasing consumer awareness of the programs implemented under the Obama Administration’s Economic Recovery Act,” said Drayton.  “Programs such as the Recovery Act 8K Tax Incentive and Making Homes Affordable can help prospective homeowners achieve the dream of home ownership and help at-risk homeowners preserve the dream.”

Clay Academy, the K-8th grade, college preparatory school affiliated with The Potter’s House, was also open and provided tours for prospective applicants interested in learning more about the academy.  Clay Academy provides one of the more comprehensive learning experiences in the Dallas Metroplex area,” said Jakes.  “This event gives us an opportunity to showcase and highlight our state-of-the-art facility, our distance learning programs and the unique environment we offer at Clay.”
