Craig Watkins, Dallas County’s First Black District Attorney, Observes BLACK HISTORY MONTH with Local Students
DALLAS, February 23, 2009 — When Craig Watkins became Dallas County’s first black district attorney in 2007, it was a history-making moment. Now the Dallas native, who’s known for his commitment to seeking justice, is sharing a piece of his past with students of Clay Academy as the school’s Black History Month celebration concludes Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 8:30 a.m.
During the event, Watkins will discuss his journey to success and partake in Q&A with students at Clay, the private, Christian college preparatory school affiliated with The Potter’s House, the 30,000-member, Dallas-based church led by Bishop T.D. Jakes.
“Craig Watkins exemplifies hard work and dedication, and I am delighted that he will chronicle his experiences with our students,” said Bishop T.D. Jakes. “As Clay Academy endeavors to develop a superior curriculum and an elite student body, it’s important that we instill in our students the value of education and perseverance. By involving speakers such as Mr. Watkins, we are able to accomplish this goal.”
Watkins prosecutes the county’s most violent offenders while simultaneously engaging strategies that seek to address the primary causes for the commission of low level crimes. He has created and/or expanded a number of programs and initiatives specific to Dallas County in an effort to maximize the use of taxpayer dollars. Among his new initiatives are: The Sexual Assault Unit, the Memo Agreement Program, the Gang Unit, the Impact Offender Program, and The Conviction Integrity Division in partnership with the Innocence Project of Texas.
