February 19, 2012, DALLAS – In honor of Black History Month, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Senior Pastor of The Potter’s House of Dallas, Inc. was awarded with the 2012 Black Heritage Award for Excellence in Ministry for his significant contributions to the Christian community, nationally and globally.
The award was presented by Mary L. Swopes, President and CEO of the Mahogany Scholarship Foundation, who founded the Black Heritage Awards in 1989 to celebrate the achievements of national and international Black leaders and organizations whose contributions and achievements have served to perpetuate the distinction and profundity of Black heritage.
“Bishop Jakes was chosen for his excellence in preaching the gospel and for his God-given gift as an empowering leader”, said Mary Swopes. “He has also become a beacon of hope for future generations and to those in need across the globe.”
Jakes continues to spread the reach of his spiritual leadership through his MegaCARE ministry. MegaCARE has most recently provided food, water, and medicines to nearly 12 million men, women, and children in Kenya and Somalia in need, donated food and toys to three orphanages and impoverished communities in Mexico during the holiday season, and partnered with local churches in the Dominican Republic’s most distressed communities to treat over 300 women and children in need of medical care.
